Jane Fonda tips: this is how you make real friends as you get older

It can be that simple.

For some people, making friends as an adult can be difficult. That is no longer a secret and we completely understand it. None other than Jane Fonda tips how to make real friends as you get older.

‘Very important for our health’

We know better than anyone that it can sometimes be difficult to make friends as an adult. Yet, according to Jane Fonda, a good friendship is ‘very important for our health’. The 85-year-old American actress, fitness guru and political activist has a great tip for making new friends and maintaining friendships as an adult, regardless of your age.

New friends

Jane Fonda shared her tip in a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, where she talked about the topic with fellow actors and close friends Sally Field and Lily Tomlin. “My favorite ex-husband, Ted Turner, said to me, ‘You don’t make new friends after 60.’ But I think he’s really, really wrong,” she said. According to the actress, friendships can have a lasting impact, especially when you feel comfortable opening up to each other. Good friendships have many benefits. This way you can increase self-confidence, the feeling of happiness and connection and help each other when necessary.

Tip

However, some people have difficulty making meaningful contact with others, but Fonda has a tip for that. “You have to be intentional,” she shares. “I never used to be intentional. For example, I would meet Sally Field, but not pursue her – well, I did pursue you,” she continues. But now the question is: how do you implement this in practice? According to Fonda, you should look for people you like to hang out with. “You have to pursue people you want to be friends with, and you have to say, ‘I want to be your friend on purpose.’ And it works. People hear that and then stick around, and then you develop new friendships.”

It is clear that Jane Fonda is an expert in the field of friendships. Her friend Sally Field recently told Entertainment Tonight about their close friendship dating back to the ’80s. The two became friends when Fonda “literally knocked on her door and said, ‘Come on, we’re going to have lunch.’” In a TED talk on female friendship, Fonda shared that her friendships – especially those with women – were a central element of shape her identity. “I don’t even know what I would do without my friends.”
