Jackie Stewart (84) used to be one of the most successful racing drivers in Formula 1. In 1969, 1971 and 1973 the athlete even took home the world championship title. Things have now become quieter for the Scottish native. In his private life, he lives in seclusion with his wife Helen, who has been suffering from dementia for several years. And the former Formula 1 driver is afraid of this illness: Jackie doesn’t want to become demented!
In an interview with The Telegraph, the 84-year-old speaks openly about his wife’s illness. He honestly admits that he is worried about himself. “Every time you forget a name, you worry. You think, ‘I did [die Krankheit]? Is that a sign?'” he says, adding: “Because we know that this disease affects so many people. Just like Helen.” Above all, it always breaks his heart when his own wife doesn’t recognize him. In the conversation he remembers: “Then one of her carers came into the room and asked if she needed anything and Helen said: ‘Yes , can you tell me when Jackie come home?'”
Just a few months ago, Jackie made headlines with his own health. The Formula 1 legend suffered a stroke in the summer. “I got up in the night and felt strange. I just fell over. And then I can’t remember,” he told Daily Mail.
