Imanuelle Grives: ‘I am pro-woman, but not anti-man’

She wouldn’t say it out loud, but Imanuelle is a feminist.

Actress Imanuelle Grives (38) is in the theater until May 3 with ‘People like you’. An epic about silent taboos and family secrets. Marie Claire spoke to her about this performance, but also about feminism.

Women’s roles

You often hear it in the film and theater world: there are few interesting female roles. If it were up to Imanuelle, women would take matters into their own hands. “I prefer to look at what I can do to change that situation. What steps can I take to contribute to the representation of women?” she says. “If you have a certain dream, you can wait until someone will make that dream come true, but that chance is incredibly small. It’s better to think: okay, I would like to play that dream role, which people can I bring together to make this happen?”

Feminist

The actress would not readily call herself a feminist, as it has recently had negative connotations. But she is. But, she emphasizes: “I am pro-woman, but not anti-man. I am pro self-reliance, but not against cooperation.” She continues: “I believe that men and women are equal, but that does not mean we are equal. Men and women are different – you also see that in science – and that is not a bad thing at all.”

Female power

Imanuelle sometimes has the idea that women, in their goal to be seen as equal, adopt a lot of behavior from men, and thereby throw beautiful qualities that they naturally have into the trash. “That is an insult to our womanhood, because why not rely on true female power? I think we can still experience a lot of growth in this area.”
