Every reason for a look back!
Time for cake at Het Loo Palace! Today marks exactly 57 years since Princess Margriet and Prof. Mr. Pieter Van Vollenhoven said yes to each other. There have been a lot of sweet snapshots of the two over the years, so Glamial thought it was high time for a look back!
Meeting
The couple met in May 1963. They both studied law at the University of Leiden at the time. The relationship between Margriet and Pieter was way ahead of its time at the time – it was not often that a princess chose a commoner.
This caused quite a few problems with family members. But fortunately the most important family member at the time, Queen Juliana, mother of Princess Margriet, was in favor of the relationship. In 1999, Pieter himself stated in an interview: “My parents-in-law had very modern views. According to them, it should be possible that their daughter would marry a Dutchman, hence their permission to announce an engagement early.”
Wedding
On January 10, 1967, Pieter and Margriet got married. They did this in The Hague in the Grote or Sint-Jacobskerk.

Family
Together they had four sons: Maurits (1968), Bernhard (1969), Pieter-Christiaan (1972) and Floris (1975). And they are now also the proud grandparents of eleven grandchildren!
Years later, the family (plus supporters) were photographed together again on Prince Willem-Alexander’s fortieth birthday.
And after all these years, they still dance together at gala dinners!
