“He was her most trusted confidant.”
It should have been a fairytale for young Lady Diana Spencer: a royal wedding, a title as Princess of Wales, and a role as queen ahead to serve her beloved country. However, we all know how tragically that story ended. During her tumultuous marriage to then Crown Prince Charles, she fortunately had one source of support: Prince William.
Rock in the surf
Yesterday, Princess Kate announced the sad news about her diagnosis after months of speculation. In the short video message, the Princess of Wales shared how much support she has for her great love, Prince William. Although it must of course be very nice for the princess that she can count on her rock during such a difficult period, according to experts, there is a very sad reason why William is so good at supporting his loved ones. In conversation with OK Magazine, royalty expert Jennie Bond reveals that William had to learn this at a very young age.
“William, sadly, is perfectly equipped to help. He knows exactly what it feels like to worry about your mother, and in his case, to lose her. He will therefore be extra careful to reassure the children and tell them exactly what he thinks they need to know.”
Crying Diana
Of course, we know that the marriage between Charles and Diana was in dire straits well before their official divorce. And according to various sources in the palace, it was the very young William who came to his mother’s aid.
For example, royalty watcher Katie Nicholl once said in the documentary William at 30: “There is one particularly moving story about how Diana was in tears in her bathroom. William then stuffed tissues under the door because he heard her crying.” Aww!
Editor Tina Brown revealed in her book The Palace Papers that William almost functioned as a ‘stand-in and buffer’ for Diana towards Charles. “In his early teens, he was his mother’s most trusted confidante. She described him as ‘my wise little old man,’” Brown said.
Ken Wharfe, the controversial former security guard of the late Diana, also agrees with this reading. “Diana put a lot of responsibility on William as a person who could comfort her, talk to her and spend time with her.”
Kate
Of course we hope that Kate will never get to the point where Wills or the kids have to give her tissues through a closed door. But if your highness needs a shoulder to cry on in the coming period: William will be there for her.
