Our queen turns out to be a real recycling royal.
The endless stream of stunning outfits that Máxima manages to conjure up from her closet can often make us at the Glamial editorial team a bit jealous. Because let’s be honest: the wardrobe of many shopaholic fashionistas is nothing like it. But how often does our queen actually wear her clothes?
Faux pas
In the past, it was extremely important for royals to show that you were above the ‘ordinary’ people. This was also reflected in clothing: appearing in a dress that a civilian could also wear was seen as a huge faux pas at the time, and wearing the same outfit multiple times was absolutely not done. In 2024 this is completely different.
New trend
In recent years, the ‘stay as normal’ trend seems to be becoming popular among the royals. In practice, this mainly means that princesses and queens suddenly put on a Zara blazer every now and then in between their haute couture designs. Even Charlene is guilty of this sometimes these days – and when Her Serene Highness dresses up in fast fashion items, you know it means business.
Re-wearing items also seems to be becoming more and more a thing among the royal ladies, and our Máxima also likes to participate in that trend. Admittedly, she doesn’t wear the same pair of trousers every week, but we can’t deny that we regularly see an item return. Expert Josine Droogendijk from Fashion Queen Máxima has even done a real calculation.
Worn versus new
In the past year we have seen Máxima 152 times. Of these, she showed up 106 times in a worn outfit, and 46 times in a new outfit. A quick calculation shows us that the share of new looks then amounts to approximately 30 percent. So most of Máx’s wardrobe is worn several times. This does not necessarily mean that she appears twenty times in the same blouse: if an item is worn twice, it is also considered a ‘re-worn’ outfit. Josine has exceptionally seen the queen 8 to 11 times in the same item, but that is extremely common by royal standards.
Yet there are also items of clothing that the queen writes off after wearing them once. There is no fixed scenario (at least for Máxima) for recycling clothing. How often we see an outfit resurface depends, for example, on its previous success, changing fashion trends, quality, and… Máx’s taste. So if we see an item more than three times, we can set the clock that it is a favorite of the queen.
