Book agenda: 9 new books that you don’t want to miss

Read-them!

It will remain chilly outside for a while, so what could be better than reading a book on the couch with a cup of tea? These 9 new books should not be missing from your list.

Angelica

Angelique is an ode to the eventful life of a resilient woman. The story of Woudenberg, written by Liddie Austin, starts when Angelique is born in the Dapperbuurt. She leaves her parental home at a young age and follows her own unique path. Until she becomes stranded after her son’s suicide. In Costa Rica, Woudenberg looks back on a life marked by tragedy, but surrounded by positivity. Following the story about her son, the 113 helpline was launched during a BNN television evening.

Everything she could carry

Historian Tiya Miles begins her story with the enslaved Rose in mid-19th century South Carolina. When her daughter Ashley is sold, she quickly puts precious belongings in a cotton bag. Miles follows the long journey of that cotton bag, which passed from hand to hand among black women for three generations. A revealing story about slavery and the post-slavery past.

Playground

AM Ollikainen is the pseudonym of married couple Aki and Mila Ollikainen, who were also nominated solo for numerous awards (and won some). Playground will be published on March 13. The second part of the Nordic Noir series and the sequel to Watercold. Police Commissioner Paula Pihlaja is confronted by an old woman, found in the forest, hanging from a tree branch. She had terminal cancer and the death was ruled a suicide. Yet it is not right for Paula. Certainly not when the body of a famous mountain climber is found shortly afterwards.

Thieves of the light

If you like writers like Jan van Aken and Umberto Eco, then Thieves of Light by Philipp Blom is a must. A historical novel set in Flanders in 1572. Young Sander witnesses the murder of his father by the Spanish occupiers. Years later, he is now a painter, and after a crime he has to flee with his deaf-mute brother Hugo. They find work in a studio in Rome and an extravagant world opens up for them. An overwhelming panorama of the Italian Renaissance.

The unforgettable journey of the Summers sisters

Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb wrote The Unforgettable Journey of the Summers Sisters. In 1937 New York, Clara and Madeleine hear that their grandmother Violet is dying. They agree to fulfill her dying wish: to travel through Europe together. With three letters from Violet to be delivered in the suitcase, in which she says goodbye to important people from her past.

End of story

After the bestseller The Woman in the Window, AJ Finn comes with End of Story. A tribute to Agatha Christie and the Knives out films. The thriller is about the successful, reclusive writer Trapp. After the disappearance of his first wife and teenage son twenty years ago, he has not written a book
or interview given. He is now terminally ill and asks Nicky Hunter to write his biography. But it soon becomes clear that Trapp does not give up his secrets easily.

The hidden bookstore

The bookshop of the title is a mysterious place in Dublin. Opened in 1921 by the French Opaline who fled from being married off. One hundred years later, Martha leaves her abusive husband and becomes a live-in housekeeper for the wayward Madame Bowden. Then she meets Henry, an academic looking for a lost manuscript that should be in a historical bookstore. A search for the store and for happiness and love follows.

A man of few words

The extraordinary story of Lorenzo Perrone who saved Primo Levi’s life was written by Italian writer and historian Carlo Greppi. Levi, the famous writer, was helped by Perrone during his imprisonment in Auschwitz. Perrone, who worked as a bricklayer for an Italian company, gave Levi food and smuggled his letters to his family. Strictly forbidden, but it helped ensure that Levi could survive his time as a forced laborer.

Zandweg 17

Journalist Eva Hoeke and her husband Marcel van Roosmalen left in
2017 the city for a life in Wormer. Hoeke recorded her time in the village in columns that have now been collected in Zandweg 17. Full of recognizable and sharp observations. From a toddler who turns into a little Medusa and a baker who bravely manages to hold his own in a very uplifting environment, to of course the move. It is also about raising three daughters and a man who suddenly made his breakthrough at the age of 54. A chronicle of modern Netherlands.

Are you a real bookworm? Then you’ve come to the right place, because that’s what we at the Elegance editorial team are too!

Here you will regularly find lists of the latest books that should not be missing from your must-read list. From an exciting thriller to an interesting biography or wonderful chick flick. Enough choice. Read-them!
