What does the order of your Instagram Story viewers actually mean?

Have you always wondered what the order of your Instagram Story views actually means? We certainly do! For some reason it always seems like the same people are at the top of our watch list. Are they obsessed? Or is it just that they watch the story first. We need answers!

How does Instagram determine the order of viewers on your Story?

What exactly is the order of your viewers? Fortunately, we have an answer to this. Once a story has less than 50 views and zero interactions (heart emoji), it will be in reverse chronological order of the people viewing it. Once your story reaches more than those 50 viewers, the list will be sorted by the people you interact with the most. Are these stalkers? Not necessarily, but it does have an influence. As soon as you view someone’s account often, Instagram keeps track of this. So the order of your Story viewers is based on your activity and the people you are closest to. Do you visit their profile or like their post or respond correctly. All factors that play a role. It can actually be compared to your post feed. The accounts you interact with the most are at the top.

What does the order of your viewers on your Story mean?

You might think that the top person on your list is obsessed with you. Unfortunately, it is all a bit different. It actually seems that it is the other way around. The top people in the list seem to be the people we interact with the most, either by liking posts or visiting their profiles. So as soon as you often like that person’s posts and interact with them a lot, then there is a good chance that it is two-way traffic. It actually makes sense that the people we interact with most are at the top of our list. So next time you don’t have to ask someone “Why are you so obsessed with me?”

Why does Instagram do this?

Maybe you’ve heard of algorithms? Instagram also works with this. It ensures that there is no randomness in the Stories. The app looks for patterns in your behavior and identifies certain accounts. Instagram does this to make the app more fun for you. This way you won’t see Stories from people you find less interesting. So you visit Instagram more quickly, because you see accounts of people you like.
