Aii: this is the effect an alcoholic beverage can have on your hair

Skip that wine…

Drinking a glass of wine every now and then should be possible, right? We just take that hangover for granted. But did you know that it can also seriously damage your hair? We explain what alcohol can do to your beloved locks.

Several disadvantages

Over the years, various studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption can cause vitamin deficiencies. Alcohol also damages your tissue, can cause an inflammatory response in your body and reduces the production of collagen. Finally, your skin’s defense mechanism is damaged by alcohol, which reduces the chance of beautiful, even skin. Your scalp is of course also skin, so it is not surprising that alcohol also affects it.

What exactly happens to your hair when you drink a lot of alcohol? It makes your hair weaker and the chance of it breaking increases. In addition, it is not good news for your scalp, as we mentioned above. “Your scalp can also become inflamed more quickly, so if you already have some scalp problems, they will only get worse,” hairstylist Gregoria Ruggeri told Well+Good. “Alcohol suffocates your hair follicle, preventing it from living out its usual life expectancy. It strangles it, so to speak, and that makes your hair brittle and thin.”

Not enough hydration

Alcohol is of course also known to remove moisture from your body and have a dehydrating effect. “If you are dehydrated all over, your skin can also become dehydrated. And since your scalp is also skin, but covered with hair, you can also experience dehydration there,” says dermatologist Rebecca Kazin. A dry scalp can lead to flakes, sensitivity and itching. It also ensures that the hair growing from your scalp has less elasticity. This, in turn, causes your hair to break off faster. Do you dream of shiny, healthy hair? Then it is better to opt for a cup of tea rather than a glass of wine.
