This is how you make a good first impression.
A job interview is of course always exciting. But, cliché but true: good preparation is half the battle. Also regarding your choice of clothing. And that is precisely why we share the unwritten dress rules for a job interview.
What to wear
Dress to impress. It is not without reason that it is still a popular statement. Of course you want to leave a stunning impression with your CV, your skills and abilities, but you often make that very first impression with your appearance. Wondering how best to dress for the interview? We share some clothing guidelines.
1. The bra rule
Now women should of course be able to decide for themselves whether or not they want to wear a bra, but for business conversations you still want to present yourself extra neatly and it is therefore better to wear a bra. Therefore, keep the unwritten bra rule in mind: if you cannot wear a normal bra underneath, the clothing is not suitable. This refers to garments such as off-the-shoulder tops and dresses with open backs. Although of course you should always do what you feel comfortable with and it may be possible for certain positions.
2. Overdressed or underdressed?
It is sometimes quite difficult to determine exactly how neatly you should dress for a job interview. Do you have a conversation within a bank? Then it makes more sense to dress formally. But what do you wear when you apply for a position as a content creator? The rule for this is that it is better to show up to that appointment overdressed than underdressed. You don’t have to wear a tight suit, but a neat cardigan or an Oxford blouse is not a bad choice.
3. No sweatpants
Even if your conversation takes place via a video call, it is wise to ensure you have a neat outfit. This is to prevent you from forgetting what is and is not in the picture. You don’t want to be that one person who suddenly has to get up and shows those washed-out sweats.
4. Not too tight
There is nothing wrong with tight-fitting clothing. Just don’t choose outfits that are too tight. Not because this can cause distraction for the person you are having the conversation with, but for yourself. After all, you don’t want to feel uncomfortable because those pants are a bit on the tight side when you sit down. Your conversation will probably go much better if you wear clothes that you feel comfortable in.
That being said, take the above as a guideline and not as a prescription. Ultimately, it is important that you feel like you are yourself in the outfit you choose.
