An era comes to an end. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II (✝96) in September 2022, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) is the longest-reigning monarch in Europe. The Danish head of state was always considered a real favorite of her people and always shone in public with his likeable nature. But that is over now: queen Margrethe will actually give up the throne next year.
This is becoming known today through various media. Among other things, Bild reports that Margrethe announces the news herself: In her New Year’s speech, she announces that she wants to give up her post as head of Denmark after 52 years on January 14, 2024. “I have decided that now is the right time,” explains the 83-year-old and adds: “Today I would especially like to say thank you. Thank you for the overwhelming warmth and support that I have received over the years.” She also mentions deteriorating health. Her successor will be her son Prince Frederik (55).
And Frederik, of all people, has made unpleasant headlines from the Danish royal family in recent weeks. He was accused of having his wife Mary (51) with the Mexican actress Genevieve Casanova (47) to have cheated. Genevieve had denied the rumors himself, but the speculation left a clear mark on the couple. Nevertheless, they recently appeared as a united front at the Christmas service and even walked hand in hand, smiling.
