The series Emily in Paris on Netflix has a lot of fans, but also a lot of haters. People in France in particular are not happy with the series. Frustration about Emily in Paris
Paris has always been one of the most popular cities in Europe. However, the popularity will become even greater when the Netflix series Emily in Paris starts. Fans of the series are eager to follow in the footsteps of the fashionable Emily, who is spotted in various well-known locations in the series. Although some places in Paris are becoming known again because of Emily in Paris, such as Terra Nera (Gabriel’s restaurant) and Place de l’Estrapade (Emily’s apartment). And this is precisely the cause of the frustration among Parisians with the series.
Fans are flooding the city according to locals from Paris and they are fed up with this. The large influx of Emily in Paris fans is now also called ‘l’invasion des imbéciles’, literally translated ‘the invasion of the imbeciles’. Unfortunately, criticism does not stop fans and so Parisians are now coming up with heavier artillery, namely angry graffiti texts.

In photos we see texts such as “Emily f*ck off” and “South Paris is not yours”. The fountain of Place de l’Estrapade also has graffiti letters: Emily not welcome. Oops… It’s clear: the locals in Paris are done with it. They especially find it annoying that the series gives such an unrealistic picture of Paris and its inhabitants. For example, Parisians are portrayed in the series as people who often cheat. In addition, viewers of the series only see ‘beautiful’, Instagrammable Paris. While things are very different in the city according to locals. Think of many messy streets, but also a lot of people with a language barrier. Due to the unrealistic and romanticized image of the series, Emily in Paris fans in Paris may contract the so-called ‘Paris syndrome’.

Despite the much hatred, the makers of Emily in Paris are continuing with the series. Filming for season 4 is currently underway again. That doesn’t seem like good news for the people of Paris, but maybe they’ll have a bit of luck after all. In the new season, main character Emily takes a trip to another city: Rome. Could this also be the start of a new era for Emily? Who knows, she might meet a new, handsome co-star in the Italian city…
