Is sleeping apart from your partner a good idea?

According to these researchers, yes!

Cozy together in bed sounds like the ideal recipe for a good night’s sleep, but is this actually so beneficial to your sleep? More and more people are choosing to sleep separately from their partner. And no, this does not necessarily mean that there is trouble in paradise. Research shows that it can be good for your relationship!

Bad sleeping

Co-sleeping can be a lot of fun, but it is not necessarily conducive to the quality of your sleep. Brain wave measurements have shown that people who lie in bed together wake up more often during the night. And when you sleep poorly, you are more tired and irritable during the day, which can lead to relationship problems. According to research from the US National Sleep Foundation, 1 in 4 Americans sleep separately for exactly that reason.

Not necessary

Sleep scientist Merijn van de Laar is not negative about sleeping separately, but also thinks it is absolutely not necessary. “Of course it varies per relationship. If you always wake up rested next to your partner, I would lie next to each other. I can imagine that you are more inclined to do this if sleep disruptors, such as snoring or sleepwalking, are involved.”

According to Van de Laar, sleeping apart does not mean that you love each other less. “That’s why I call it lat-sleeping and not sleep-separation,” he laughs.

Make appointments

Are you afraid that your relationship will lose its spark if you always sleep separately? It’s not necessary. Of course, you and your partner can decide for yourself how you will do this. For example, choose to sleep together for 1 or 2 days, or to eat breakfast in bed together at the weekend. Please try out what feels good for you. Sweet dreams!
