In a few days she will take the throne. After 52 years as monarch, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) is leaving the scepter to her son Crown Prince Frederik (55). Princess Mary (51) will become the next Queen of Denmark on January 14th and the first female regent ever born in Australia. For almost 20 years, the mother of four has always presented herself confidently and dutifully at Frederik’s side. But who is the future Danish queen actually?
Although Mary was born in Hobart, Australia on February 5, 1972, she has Scottish roots. She has three siblings – Jane, Patricia and John. In 2000, she met Frederik in the Slip Inn bar during the Summer Olympics in Sydney. The two initially had a long-distance relationship before their love was officially confirmed in 2001. About three years later they tied the knot. With Prince Christian (18), Princess Isabella (16) and the twins Prince Vincent (12) and Princess Josephine (12) they have four descendants in common.
Mary is considered very sporty. Her weekly fitness program includes jogging, yoga, swimming and Pilates. Alongside Princess Kate (41) and Queen Máxima (52), Mary is also considered one of the best-dressed royals. Karl Lagerfeld (✝85) once described Mary and Prince William’s (41) wife as “royal twins” – because the two are visually very similar, are always perfectly styled and are extremely popular with fans.
