Patience is a virtue!
It took three months, but our wait is finally rewarded: the name of the new Bhutan princess who was born last September has been announced. This weekend, Queen Jetsun Pema and King Jigme Khesar of Bhutan announced on Instagram what they named their offspring.
Birth
On September 9, the Bhutanese court announced the happy news that a new princess had been born. “We are honored to share the wonderful news that a healthy baby girl was born today at Lingkana Palace in Thimphu to Their Majesties, the Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King, ed.) and Gyaltsuen (Dragon Queen, ed.), on the 25th day of the 7th month of the year of the Female Water Rabbit,” official palace sources wrote at the time.
Name and photo
Apart from an announcement of the birth, the court provided precious little information about the new Bhutan princess. We were in the dark about her name for months – until now! The royal couple treats us to a beautiful photo of the girl via Instagram, and lets us know what they named their daughter.

“Her Royal Highness the Gyalsem is called Sonam Yangden Wangchuck,” the photo reads. “Sonam is a Bhutanese name that denotes merit, longevity and happiness. The name Yangden, which means precious jewel, signifies prosperity and well-being.”
Family expansion
It was no big surprise that the Bhutanese royal couple waited so long to announce their name. Little Sonam already has two older brothers, and their names were also long overdue when they were born. Until September, the family consisted of father, mother and two sons: Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk, who was born in February 2016, and Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck, who was born in March 2020. With their new sister, the family is complete. We’re already looking forward to snaps of the extended family!
