For some reason, we like to give summer a specific name. You’ve probably heard the term hot girl summer before. This year, we’re giving our summer a new name, at least if TikTok is to be believed. This is brat summer and what you need to know about it.
What is Brat?
Brat is the latest album by British pop star Charlie XCX. The brat summer trend was born thanks to the album and its aesthetic. You may have seen the bright green album cover or listened to the music. The album has club vibes. In several songs, Charlie talks about drug use, partying and letting yourself go in general. It’s wild. But the album also has more nostalgic and melancholic sentiments. Think of it as dancing away your worries in a sweaty club with your girlfriends. That’s the essence of Brat.

The Brat album is of course a big deal in itself, but it has become much bigger than that. The album has inspired a huge trend that plays a major role in current pop culture. The meme is so well-known that it has even made its way into American politics. Presidential candidate Kamala Harris is even using the meme for her campaign.
How do you experience a brat summer?
To enjoy the trend yourself, it is never a bad idea to invest in some bright green accessories. If you want to be brat, the look has to be there of course! Furthermore, a brat summer is nice and chaotic. A brat summer is a mix of luxury but also of more trashy things, as the singer describes it herself in an interview. Think of a pack of cigarettes with a cheap lighter and a white top without a bra underneath. Let your existential fear out. After all, we all have it and during this summer we are just aware of it! Pointing out something green every now and then and saying that it is brat also helps a lot. But the ultimate goal is of course to fill your summer with beautiful, but somewhat chaotic memories. Do the things that you might not have dared to do before, don’t be afraid to embarrass yourself. This summer is nice and trashy and we embrace it!
