We simply cannot avoid poop problems. You probably recognize it, you are on holiday, relaxing, but in the meantime you cannot properly go to the toilet. Running a big message just isn’t possible. But what about this? Can we solve this a bit more simply? Read on!

Why you can’t poop on holiday

Does it depend on the amount of stress we have preparing for the trip? This may be partly the cause, but not entirely. Wouter de Jonge, professor of experimental neurogastroenterology, indicates that your gastrointestinal tract and your nervous system are more connected than you might think. This is connected to nerve connections and stress hormones. The ‘slow’ part of your nervous system is active when your body is resting. This means that you often have to go to the toilet in the morning. A night flight can sometimes disrupt your gastrointestinal tract.

Less fiber and moisture inside

A lack of rest is not only a potential problem for not being able to poop. The sudden change in your diet also plays a major role. You often eat differently on holiday. For example, you consume less fruit and vegetables (fiber). Fiber means soft stools. In addition, you often consume less moisture due to the warm weather. Your body, as it were, sucks more fluid from your stool. The stress that you often automatically feel (the toilets are dirty or you have a noisy bathroom) not only leads to less rest, but also to the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Your body is preparing for a flight-or-fight situation. Not very useful when you have to poop.

The solution

Fortunately, we have a solution for this. It is important that you take your time in the toilet, for example take a book with you. This way you are not in stress mode and you can poop in peace. In addition, continue to eat fiber and drink enough water. A varied diet often also helps. For example, take some bread, an egg and some yogurt with fruit in the morning. This way you get something of everything. Are you too late with this? Don’t avoid eating because of stomach pain. Don’t suddenly eat more fiber if you already have severe stomach pain. This can cause a larger blockage. Oh yes, and do you really like coffee? Then you’re in luck, because drinking coffee is also recommended if you can’t poop properly. Caffeine stimulates the muscle layers between the colon, causing them to contract more.
