Vegan and vegetarian restaurants are becoming increasingly popular and are sprouting up like roots ;-). At Meatless District on Bilderdijkstraat in Amsterdam-West they have been doing this for a while, namely since 2016. This restaurant existed long before oat cappus were served.
The sun was shining in Amsterdam and we happened to know that a new menu was launched at “MD” a few weeks ago. Armed with sunglasses and a rumbling stomach, the editors of ZE.nl jumped on their bikes and of course they happily stopped by to taste it. Apart from new dishes, the menu is now organized in a shared dining manner, which is fortunate because there are so many dishes that you really have to try! As the intro and name of the restaurant may have already hinted at, no meat is served – in fact, the entire menu is plant-based or vegan.
Once we arrived we took a seat on the terrace (nice in the sun). With more than enough choice on the menu, we pampered ourselves and let the service surprise us with absolute recommendations of what the kitchen has to offer, and that was a good thing. One of the first dishes we were served was a watermelon sashimi and it was mouth-watering. (The so-called tomato lox was also a taste explosion.)

The next batch of delicious dishes included the Korean fried cauliflower and the spicy oyster mushroom skewers – they were really great. Despite our empty stomachs, we were quite full and actually had no room for dessert. But who are we not to try this for you too! (First world problems…) No sooner said than done: in the name of science, could we try the passion fruit cheesecake once to share? Once we arrived at the table, our empty plate could be cleared again after 3-4 minutes. Wow, this was delicious!

In short, you can come here for a wonderful evening of dining, lunch or even a nice drink (they serve organic wines and yes, they even have vegan beer). For the meat and fish eaters among us – don’t worry and don’t be afraid, because you will also get your money’s worth here. The Meatless District team shows you and mainly tastes how creative you can be with vegetables (and fruit). Highly recommended, in our opinion one of the best vegan restaurants in Amsterdam. We will definitely come back!
