In the latest Glamial we take a look at the Danish tiaras.
Crowns, sceptres, swords, tiaras… The crown jewels of royal families worldwide are to die for. In Glamial we occasionally dig into the jewelry box of a monarchy. This time: Denmark.
Crown Jewels
The Danish Crown Jewels are the only ones in the world that can be admired by the public as museum pieces and that are still in use. When the sitting queen is not wearing them, they are displayed in the secure cellar beneath Rosenborg Castle.
For 52 years, Queen Margrethe selected her jewels there, such as the Emerald Parure, but since she abdicated the throne at the beginning of this year, it is her daughter-in-law Mary who can wear the official crown jewels. Mary can choose from a whole set of brooches and four parures. One of them is the Oranje-Nassau pearl tiara, including a necklace with 19 large pearls dating from 1600. Because pearls need skin contact to remain beautiful, Margrethe’s mother wore the jewelry to bed for optimal shine. And Margrethe herself also wore the jewelry from this set regularly and liked to combine them with tiaras and other diamond jewelry.

Napoleon’s ex
The new Queen Mary is less outspoken. It therefore seems unlikely that she will be as strong as her predecessor. One of Mary’s favorites isn’t an official crown jewel, but it does have a rich history. It is the Ruby parure that consists of a tiara, necklace, bracelet, brooch, earrings and – since the innovations by Mary – a ring. The set was made for Napoleon Bonaparte’s ex. After various wanderings through Europe, he ended up in Denmark in 1869.
The current King Frederik inherited it from his grandmother in 2000 to give it to his future wife. Four years later, Australian Mary became the proud owner of the precious set in the red and white colors of Denmark. On May 14, Mary and her king will have been married for 20 years. That seems like a great opportunity to go all out. Come on Mary, dazzle us with bling!
