We’ve all become slightly – okay… heavily – addicted to it. Especially in winter, it is wonderful to apply a layer of lip balm to your lips every five minutes. But there are some lip balms you should watch out for.
Lip balm
Did you know that you ingest lip balm that you apply? If you use it every day, you will swallow an estimated four whole lipsticks every year. Wow! That’s quite something. That is why it is important to look carefully at the ingredients and check whether they are harmful to your health.
Which lip balms to avoid?
Dangerous ingredients have been found in some lip balms in recent years, even in lip balms especially for children(!). According to the Consumers’ Association, it is better to avoid these substances in lip balm:
- Cera microcrystallina
- Ceresin
- (Hydrogenated) Microcrystalline wax
- (Hydrogenated) Polyisobutene
- Mineral oil
- Ozokerite
- Paraffin (liquid)
- Petrolatum
- Polyethylene
- Polybutene
Which one can I use?
It is best to use lip balms that are made on a base of natural oils such as shea butter, almond oil, olive oil and coconut oil. Just read the packaging carefully before you buy something and you will be completely safe again! Then you can calmly apply it every day again, although skipping it once in a while is not a bad thing.
