Birthday Grand Duchess Maria Teresa treats her to beautiful new portrait photos

The Grand Duchess looks radiant!

Party in the mini state of Luxembourg today! Grand Duchess Maria Teresa is celebrating her 68th birthday at court. And that is why the queen treats her to some beautiful photos.

From little girl…

That little María Teresa Mestre y Batista would later become the Grand Duchess of a tiny European country? The little Cuban girl probably wouldn’t have believed that before.

As a descendant of a wealthy bourgeois family in Cuba, the family had to make a choice during the Cuban Revolution. So Maria Teresa grew up in New York, Spain, and Switzerland, where her parents eventually found a permanent new home.

…To Grand Duchess

In Geneva, the ambitious aunt studied Political Science, just like Prince Henri. Sparks flew between the two in college, and just a few months after Maria Teresa received her diploma, the Luxembourg court announced her engagement to their crown prince.

The couple tied the knot on Valentine’s Day 1981, and many years, children, grandchildren, and sweet moments have passed between the couple.

Birthday

Even today it is clear how Maria Teresa prefers to spend her time: with her great love. In the series of beautiful photos that she shared today via Instagram, she chooses a snapshot with Henri front and center as the cover image.

In a rare moment of public affection, the pair were captured on camera cuddling. Maria Teresa also shares a snapshot in full regalia, where she beams at the viewer with a loving look towards her husband in a royal blue gown from Talbot Runhof with the Belgian scroll diadem on her head.

The official Instagram account of the Luxembourg court also commemorates the big day, sharing some of the snaps of their Grande-Duchesse.

As is the custom in Luxembourg, the Grand Duchess is congratulated in no fewer than four languages: “Alles Guddes fir de Gebuertsdag! Joyeux Anniversaire! Everything is good for fun! Happy Birthday!”

Of course, we can only agree with this. We toast your health today, Your Highness!
