To achieve the highest possible turnover, almost all companies use clever marketing tricks. No matter how much you resist it, you too will fall for it at some point. If you haven’t already fallen for it regularly… We share 7 smart marketing tricks to make you aware of it.
Discounted products
You will see many discounted products both online and in physical stores. A €380 camera that now costs ‘only’ €320 or a toy car from €15 to €10. And there are many different offers that suddenly make the products very attractive. In this way, many people buy products that they do not necessarily need. So it may seem like you’ve saved money, but actually you haven’t. There are also companies that increase their prices weeks before Black Friday starts, so that the prices during the Black Friday Sale are normal prices.
One expensive product/service
Another smart tactic is to make one product or service very expensive, which suddenly makes the other products or services look much cheaper. Take the dishes on a menu in a restaurant as an example. If there is one dish that is much more expensive than the rest, it feels like you are paying quite cheaply if you choose a cheaper dish. While you will probably still spend more than you would have liked in advance.
Creating urgency
Companies are playing a smart game when they create urgency through texts such as ‘only 2 available’ and ‘this offer is about to expire’. As a customer, this makes you more likely to make hasty decisions, which means you only think about the purchase afterwards. Was this necessary? And wouldn’t it have been cheaper somewhere else?
Discount popular product
What also appears to work well is to make a product for which many people know the standard price much cheaper. This, as it were, lures customers into the store, so there is a good chance that they will also buy other things. “That beer was so cheap, I can also get this bag of chips.”
The maze effect
Stores like Ikea and H&M are very good at it: the maze effect. Before you get to the standard and/or popular items, you will first be guided past the impulse items. Many people fall for it easily and take a few gadgets here and there with them. Do they really need these things? No, often not… These companies think about it very smartly.
Prices not rounded & three get two pay
We conclude the list with two classics: the unrounded prices and the three get two pay promotions. Although everyone realizes that the difference between €3.99 and €4 is only 1 cent, many people are unconsciously more likely to take the unrounded prices. The same applies to the three get two pay promotions. Even though you only need one suit and it will ultimately be more expensive if you get three, most people still take two extra suits.
