A look inside Máxima’s refrigerator: this is what the queen eats in a day

Nowadays, Máx has a super healthy diet, but that has not always been the case.

Traveling the world for all kinds of charities and being the queen at event after event is of course top sport in itself, but we suspect that Máxima does not only owe her slender figure to her royal duties. So it’s high time to take a look in the queen’s refrigerator.

Gordita

We now know Máxima as a confident woman with a fit body, but that was not always the case. As a child, she was insecure about her appearance and was described as ‘tall and sturdy’ by her peers, whom she stood out above. She has reportedly even been given the nickname ‘gordita’, which means nothing more or less than ‘fatty’. Although this probably mainly had to do with the fact that it was trendy in Argentina at the time for girls to be skinny.

Cigarettes and instant soup

As a child, Máxima loved everything with chocolate, but in her adolescence she discovered a substitute for all that sweetness: cigarettes. According to Marcia Luyten’s biography, she started smoking at a young age, and when she got her first office job, she lived mainly on yogurt and instant soups – anything to avoid gaining weight.

Healthier eating pattern

In her twenties, Máx exchanged her diet for a healthier diet. She then lives in New York, and is known among her friends for her rich salads. Because she spends most of her time sitting behind a desk, she makes sure she gets enough exercise outside working hours. For example, she walks home every day after work, goes to dance class in the evening and roller skates in Central Park every Saturday.

Fitter than ever

Today, Máxima is perhaps fitter than ever. She says she exercises no less than five times a week. And don’t be under any illusions that you will one day bump into her at your local gym, no: the queen has her own gym, tennis court and swimming pool at her disposal at the palace. Moreover, the royal family largely leaves the cooking to their own chef. She in turn gives Máx instructions about what needs to be cooked. In 2015, hubby Willem-Alexander described this – apparently a bit frustrated – as ‘extremely healthy’. The queen is said to eat a lot of fish and vegetables.

In the morning, Máxima starts her day with a bowl of yogurt with fruit and a cup of black coffee. For lunch there is usually lunch on the menu. It’s all wonderfully healthy, but would Her Majesty really never indulge in a bitterballen or glass of rosé? We secretly guess so!
