‘Forest bathing’ is good for your mental health: this is what you need to know about it

Just relaxing is very good for your mental health. You can do this in many different ways. ‘Forest bathing’, for example, is a new and trendy way to relax. But what does this actually mean? We explain.

What is forest bathing?

Forest bathing sounds kind of crazy if you translate it literally. But of course we’re not going to tell you that you literally have to go bathe in the forest. Forest bathing is a way to relax and a form of nature therapy. Think of it as a sensory experience in nature. You use all or as many of your senses as possible. For example, think of listening to the sounds in the forest, seeing all the beautiful plants and feeling the textures. There are three important principles in forest bathing. The first principle is that it’s all about mindfulness. You focus completely on the here and now and your environment. Furthermore, you do not practice forest bathing to pursue a specific goal. You just go there without a goal. Finally, forest bathing is about making a connection with nature.

These are the benefits

Forest bathing is very good for your mental health, especially if you suffer from stress. You can relax in nature for a while. It’s a good way to develop a greater appreciation for life. You become aware of all the small and beautiful things in nature that you would otherwise not notice. Furthermore, it is also a way to give your brain a break. You completely remove yourself from everyday life, even if it only lasts for a moment. Forest bathing is also very nice for people who are highly sensitive. You can really take in the beauty of nature.

This is how you do it

If you want to do forest bathing, it is first important that you find the right location. A forest is of course the most logical option here. But another nature reserve such as the dunes is also very appropriate. Then put on comfortable clothes that you can walk in. Put your phone on silent and when you arrive, focus on being present in the moment. Leave all the stress of everyday life behind you. Take in your surroundings carefully. Focus on what you see, hear and smell. Then go into nature and make this walk a sensory experience. This means you might get a little dirty. You could even take off your shoes to really feel the ground beneath your feet.

When you go into nature, there are of course a few things you should take into account. For example, take any bugs into account. Check yourself for ticks when you get home. Don’t get lost either. Stay on the path or at least right next to the path. Finally, listen to the weather forecasts. Stay home if bad weather is forecast.
