Suddenly she was on her own. It caused a burnout, but also an identity crisis. In the case of 33-year-old Wesley, the burnout is caused, as in many cases, by too much pressure at work. The IT specialist received the so-called wake-up call due to a panic attack, which he suddenly had on the train on the way to work. “That was the moment when it really didn’t work anymore,” he says. Wesley then suffered from a burnout for two years.
Panic attack as a wake-up call
In the reality program he tells Joris and farmer Astrid (28) about the panic attack, which was a wake-up call for his burnout. Astrid doesn’t actually know what an anxiety attack is. Just like with the other assistant farmers, Astrid is not under any pressure to perform. They have a very positive outlook on life. That is why they are called in to provide support for people with burnout. At the care farm, people with burnout finally have time to recover. Something that is necessary, because according to farmer Astrid, such a panic attack is “just not healthy”. Time for change!
“Slave to your ambitions”
Moreover, it is often not easy for people with a burnout to accept that they have the mental illness. While it is important to talk about mental problems. For example, Wesley is now in his thirties, but the mental problems probably started during his high school years. Then he was “always looking for the next thing.” He just wanted to keep going. “Then you’re never enjoying what you’re doing or okay with anything,” he says. He says it drives him crazy. “A kind of slave to your ambitions,” Joris then concludes, which Wesley agrees with. He hopes that with the help of the aid farmers he can get started on his own.
