From self-designed dresses to raincoats made from oilcloth: nothing is too crazy for the Danish queen when it comes to fashion.
After 52 years, Margrethe abdicated the throne, but she will remain queen of fashion forever. The Danish queen’s style varies from ‘majestic’ to ‘deliciously crazy’, which results in a lot of memorable outfits. We list five of her most eccentric looks.
1. Fur and blue green

When you say Margrethe, you say colorful. The queen has been regularly spotted wearing an animal skin over her dress for decades. During the New Year’s reception in 2007, she hung an impressive copy over a green satin dress. Add the necessary jewelry and a tiara and voilà, you have a queen’s outfit par excellence.
2. Rain coat chic

Margrethe has proven more than once that royal fashion does not always have to consist of glamorous dresses and flamboyant hats. Our favorite example of this was this insanely colorful raincoat, made from an oilcloth. The queen thought it was funny, “because it rains quite often here and rain is already gloomy enough.” It also rains quite often in the Netherlands: here’s a tip for Queen Máxima.
3. Bohemian queen

Well before we were all walking around in exotic prints, Margrethe was already parading through life in the nicest bohemian looks in 2003. Trendsetter! During a holiday in the south of France, the queen combined this bohemian maxi skirt with an airy yellow top: comfortable yet fashionable. And how sweet is this photo with hubby Henri…

4. Scarecrow
Whether we are really fans of this look or not, we will leave it open for now, but one thing is certain: we have rarely seen a crazier outfit on a queen. You can say what you want about Margrethe, but she dares.
5.Handmade

Margrethe’s sense of fashion did not come out of the blue. For decades she has been designing costumes for the theater and film world, and if her schedule allows it, she is also not afraid to sew something for herself. This dress, which she wore in 2007 on the occasion of a visit by King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, is also her own design. Now that the queen has transferred her title to daughter-in-law Mary, there is obviously more free time. We hope that Margrethe will use it to design many beautiful dresses!
