Soon he will be king! On January 14th, Crown Prince Frederik (55) is to be appointed Denmark’s new ruler. His mother, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83), announced in a speech on New Year’s Eve that she wanted to retire. After her abdication, her son and his wife Princess Mary (51) will not be crowned. Instead, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen names both king and queen. This is how the whole thing will happen in a few days!
The change of throne will only take place at a meeting of the State Council. Margrethe will sign her declaration of abdication. “His Royal Highness the Crown Prince [Frederik]will arrive at Christiansborg Palace as Crown Prince and leave as King,” explains the palace on its website kongehuset.dk. After the proclamation, “the new regent will assume all functions of the head of state in accordance with the constitution.” Prince Christian (18) will also be present – he is then officially crown prince after his father’s appointment as king.
Queen Margrethe was appointed monarch on January 15, 1972 by then Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag. She was 32 years old at the time. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II (✝96), she was the world’s longest-serving female head of state.
