These things all twenty-somethings should know about fitness

Are you 20+ and do you want to start exercising? Then that can be quite intimidating. We completely understand that, but don’t panic! These are the things all twentysomethings need to know about fitness.

Getting started with strength training is hard, but it’s worth it

If you’re just starting out with strength training, it’s all a bit awkward. You have to learn how to handle the materials, find the right position and avoid some fiddling while looking for the right weight. This first phase is difficult, but you will start to see results quite quickly. You will not immediately have big muscles, but as a beginner you will soon be able to see the effect of your training. This makes taking that first step well worth it.

No one is concerned with what you are doing

Going to the gym can be quite intimidating. It then feels like all eyes are on you and everyone is judging how you are exercising. But in reality this is not the case at all. People at the gym are much busier with their own workout than yours, really.

Master the basics first

There are a lot of different ways to perform an exercise. You can squat in many ways. But before you can work on those variations, it is important to first master the basic exercise. So first learn the basic exercises such as bench press, squats, deadlifts and lunges. Become an expert at these exercises and then start with variations.

Learn how to use the equipment in the gym

When you’re new to the gym, it’s easy to stick to the things you know. Lifting a pair of dumbbells or operating a treadmill is simple. But the gym has so much more to offer. So try out the devices and see which ones you like to use. This way you can put together the best routine for you.

Sometimes boring is better

Sports are supposed to be fun, but sometimes boring is better. By this we mean that it is much better to have a set routine than to try a different workout every week. By sticking to your training schedule, you will become stronger and you can add or try new exercises over time.

You will probably need to rest a little longer between your sets

Resting is also an important part of your workout. You can sometimes feel like you can only take a small breather after a set and then have to continue straight away. But this is certainly not the case. Find out which rest times are optimal for your goals. And if you pause a little longer, it’s certainly not the end of the world.

You really need a rest day

Rest days are just as important as your workout days. On these days your muscles can recover. Without recovery you run a greater risk of injury. So not going for a day is a good idea!
