These are the funniest Flemish words and their meanings

Just because you understand each other does not mean that you understand each other. In Flanders they use a number of words and pronunciations that are completely unknown or even strange to Dutch people. How about having a ‘clean poop’?

A cup of coffee

If you’re sitting on a terrace in Flanders, don’t be surprised if you hear someone order a ‘cup of coffee’. Actually, by a bag they just mean a cup.

To walk

By this they don’t mean walking, but running. This often causes some confusion!

A clean poop

No, they don’t really mean that your poop is clean. It means nice buttocks. This still sounds a bit crazy, but at least we now understand what they mean by it.

Roundabout

This one is still quite understandable. It means roundabout. Perhaps roundabout makes even more sense?

I like seeing you

If you’ve seen Temptation Island, then you know what ‘I love you’ means. If not, it can be quite confusing. In Flemish this means: I love you/I am in love with you. So just remember! Wink wink.

Fall in love

We visualize you falling with your butt in the butter. Unfortunately, it means: ‘getting caught in the middle’. The Flemish say ‘hole’ instead of ‘nose’.

Have water in the basement

Could it have something to do with a failed renovation? No! This means that your pants are ‘high water’. In other words: your pants are too short.

To have a soft spot for someone

Are we talking about a brown bean, a kidney bean or a broad bean? None of them! If you have a soft spot for someone, then you have a soft spot for that person.

Which Flemish expressions do you know?
