Aluminum foil: indispensable in every kitchen. You may have noticed that there are two different sides, but why?
Aluminium foil
Everyone uses it sometimes: to keep a plate of food warm for longer, to wrap sandwiches or to cover food. Everyone has foil at home, and if not, you have certainly come into contact with it. You have probably noticed that there is a matte and a matte side to it. Why is it like that? And what is the difference between the two sides?
Two sides
First, it’s important to know that aluminum manufacturers don’t make two different sides on purpose. This has to do with the production process: the material rolls out glossy on one side, while the other side remains matte.
Difference
Many people swear by the fact that the two different sides also have two different functions. For example, the shiny side would reflect heat, while the matte side would retain heat more. It would be better to roast a potato with the shiny side inwards because the potato will then cook better. But is that really the case?
The reality
If you are now convinced of the logic and believe that the different sides both have a different function, we have bad news for you. That doesn’t seem to be the case at all. Some chefs even notice that the shiny side sometimes rubs off on the food they prepare.
Conclusion
We do not fully know whether the two sides have an effect on preparing food, but we do know that aluminum foil is good for various other things. The multifunctionality ensures that you can easily polish silver cutlery with the foil, and you can also use it as padding when wrapping dishes and gifts. You can clean silver jewelry yourself with it! It is therefore always useful to have it at home, because you never know what else you can use it for.
