Do you spend several hours on the train every week? Then it would be a shame to ‘throw away’ this time by being bored. There are plenty of opportunities to have fun on the train and sometimes learn something in the meantime. In this article we share the best ways to do this. So before you know it, you’ll be at your final destination.
read a book
Are you a bookworm or do you want to read more? Then the train is the perfect place to dive into a wonderful book. For example, choose a love story, a thriller or something about psychology that will broaden your knowledge. There is plenty of choice, so buy some new books and read them on the train.
Deadlines at work or school
Are there one or more deadlines planned soon? Then, as far as possible, work on this on the train. This way you spend your time productively and everything you get done on the train you no longer have to do at home. That sounds like a win-win situation.
Listen to a podcast
Nowadays there are a lot of podcasts. Name a theme and there is a podcast about it. Not only are there podcasts for entertainment such as Geuze & Gorgels, there are also many podcasts from which you actually learn something. For example, journalist Tom Veldhuijzen interviews various TBS patients in the podcast series TBS and you learn English little by little with the podcast Espresso English.
Start a conversation
Take off your headphones and start a conversation with a fellow passenger. Yes, we know, this might feel uncomfortable. But who knows, maybe a very nice conversation will arise or maybe even a friendship will blossom. Don’t you think such a conversation is more satisfying than, for example, looking at your cell phone for the entire train journey?
Download educational apps
Mobile apps like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook may be fun, but what good are they in the end? Do you really get satisfaction from it? Skip these apps and download educational apps such as Duolingo, Fashcards+ and Scribd. These apps are also a lot of fun and very educational. Isn’t that of much more use than liking Instagram posts?
Observe the environment
It is wise to occasionally focus your attention somewhere other than your mobile phone. Look around you. What do you notice? What do you see outside? Who’s walking? What clothes do people wear? Try observing everything around you, without immediately forming an opinion. By focusing on your environment, you see things that you have not noticed before.
Watch a movie
Are you really ready for some rest and distraction? Then download a nice movie before you leave, make sure you bring headphones and enjoy a wonderful movie. Although it will be a waste of time to watch a movie every train journey, you will also give yourself the rest you deserve.
