Royal hats: the bigger, the better?

We all know that royals wear hats. But what are actually the largest hats that have ever been worn? Moderator Petra listed them for you.

Maybe you immediately have an image of a certain hat from Máxima. Well, me too. At the wedding of Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Princess Anita, Máxima appeared in the church wearing a red-pink crinkle hat. The picture was certainly festive, but was the person behind her in the church also happy with it…?

Princess Laurentien also wore a battleship on her head at the civil wedding of Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Anita.

This pink frayed hat, worn at the wedding of Felipe and Letizia (2004), has now been reduced in size, but has never been reworn. Who knows, maybe it will show up this summer?

A ship’s christening calls for a big hat, Máxima must have thought.

Máxima should also leave this hat at home in wind force 7 and higher.

Catherine has a soft spot for (sloping) saucer hats. This stunner from Philip Treacy is one of her larger headpieces.

We now also know the hat of the Belgian Princess Claire at the wedding of Princess Maria Laura of Belgium through blogs on this site. It was quite a windy day and the hat almost got away. Then just like that, Claire must have thought. The whole situation made her sons Nicolas and Aymeric laugh.

Claire often wears big hats. This also applies to the wedding of Albert and Charlene.

Claire on National Day, July 21, 2023:

Beatrice Borromeo, daughter-in-law of Princess Caroline of Monaco, is regularly seen wearing a larger hat. This also applies to the 2022 National Holiday.

She also wore a large hat the year before, during National Holiday 2021.

Princess Caroline herself wore a large white hat with a pink band during the wedding of her brother Prince Albert to Charlene Wittstock.

Queen Letizia of Spain wore a large copy during the coronation of King Charles.

Sophie, the current Duchess of Edinburgh, also regularly wears large hats. They are often saucer hats, but she also wears other large ones.

Of course, Royal Ascot also requires a special hat.

Princess Michael of Kent loves big hats.

Lady Gabriella Windsor, the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, like many British Royals, also likes to wear a big hat every now and then.

The Belgian Queen Mathilde can also wear a big hat.

At the opening of the Danish parliament earlier this year, we saw Crown Princess Mary wearing a – for her – large hat. Beautiful!
