A big day for Denmark! A few minutes ago, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) signed her declaration of abdication in front of the Council of State. With this unspectacular action it is already sealed: Her son Prince Frederik (55) is the new ruler, his wife Mary (51) is the new queen. While Margrethe left after the signing, the new monarch now presents himself to his people: Frederik greets from the balcony for the first time as king!
In his black military uniform, Frederik steps onto the balcony and waves to his subjects. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appears next to him. She thanks Margrethe for her achievement – and proclaims her son king three times. He is visibly moved and wipes the tears from the corners of his eyes. He then gives his first speech as king before Mary approaches him in a white dress.
Of course, Frederik’s children are also there to celebrate with their dad. Prince Christian (18), the new heir to the throne, Princess Isabella (16), Prince Vincent (13) and Princess Josephine (13) also wave from the balcony. While Isabella wears a red costume, her siblings wear suits and coats in a simple dark blue.
