This film, which will be released in 2026, also promises to surprise again. The film may put another character from the world of Mario in the spotlight. Ooh!
New Super Mario movie coming in 2026
People often think “everything was better in the past” and this is also reflected in the current series and films. Old classics are increasingly returning to the TV screen or silver screen. Think of the popular live-action film about Barbie and the series The Last Airbender on Netflix, which is based on the well-known Nickelodeon cartoon from the zeros. In 2023, in addition to a film about Barbie, there was also an animated film about the most famous game character from the 1990s: Super Mario. This turned out to be a good idea, because The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a great success worldwide! They had the best opening weekend ever for an animated film and it became the second most successful film of the year.
It is therefore not surprising that the makers of this film are now coming up with a follow-up film in the Super Mario series. The new film was – appropriately – announced on Super Mario Day by Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s game director, and Chris Meledandri: the director of animation studio Illumination. Unfortunately, we still have to be patient. The new Super Mario film will be released in 2026, in the United States and several other markets worldwide to be precise, on April 3, 2026. It is not known whether this is also the case in the Netherlands. But it is a fact that the sequel film will happen! The makers have already started designing the sets. Ooh!
Important role for Yoshi?
The makers of the new Super Mario film have already started designing the sets. So they know what the film will be about. They will then begin the animation process of the film later this year. So they are still busy with the sequel film and also remain mysterious about the story of the new film. Even if moviegoers of The Super Mario Bros. Movie could have a vague suspicion. At the end of the first film, an extra scene is shown after the credits. And it looks like this scene hints at the sequel.
