From fight to girls’ afternoon: the bond between Letizia and her mother-in-law

The relationship with her royal in-laws was not always easy.

Earlier this week we saw plenty of happy snaps of the Spanish royal ladies during a sunny shopping afternoon in Palma de Mallorca. From the photos you might think that Letizia, Princesses Leonor and Sofía and Queen Sofía are eternal besties, but that wasn’t always the case…

In-laws

Keeping a straight face, smiling and waving in a friendly manner, and above all never showing that you are annoyed, that is part of being a royal. After the traditional Easter mass in 2018, however, things seemed to go wrong for the Spanish. With Leonor in a wayward teenage mood, a stubborn Queen Sofía and a snapping Queen Letizia, a small scandal was born, of which the video went all over the world.

Soon, social media was full of people who came to Queen Sofía’s aid and Letizia had a hard time. Critics found pictures of Leti pointing rather venomously at her mother-in-law, while Sofía tries to ignore her daughter-in-law with a sigh.

Well, of course it can happen that you have a less chic moment as a royal. After all, which family can say that they have never had a fight? We are lucky that when there are quarrels with the in-laws, there are no cameras pointed at us.

Greek interference

Moreover, Letizia had the misfortune that another royal family also began to interfere in the matter. Queen Sofía is after all the sister of King Constantine II, the last monarch of Greece. This forced none other than Princess Marie-Chantal to stand up for her aunt-in-law.

This is how the princess appeared in the comments on the video above. “Is this real?”, the Greek Crown Princess first asked. When confirmed, she responded again: “What does the Spanish press say about this? This is so terrible,” and “This makes me so angry!”.

Another Twitter user explains to the Greek royal that many Spaniards are angry about the images. “The Queen Mother does not deserve to be treated like this!”, he states angrily. Marie-Chantal then responds: “No grandmother deserves to be treated like this! Wow, she (Letizia, ed.) has shown her true colors.” Aiii.

All’s well that ends well

The PR nightmare seemed complete for the Casa Real. In the weeks following this incident, the royal family was photographed with unenthusiastic smiles on joint outings, and every effort was made to emphasize that Leti and her mother-in-law – really, truly, honestly – got along just fine.

At the time, this may have all seemed very contrived and insincere, but hey. Time heals all wounds, right?

In the meantime, a few years have passed and it seems that all is well again between the Spanish royals. At the funeral of the late King Constantine, even Marie-Chantal and Letizia were snapped chatting happily.

With Leti and her mother-in-law enjoying family outings in the sun, it seems like all is well for them again. Hopefully that princely temperament won’t show itself again!
