Fact or fiction: big buttocks are healthy

Big buttocks are not always seen as good. However, there are several advantages to having a full butt.

Research about buttocks

The University of Oxford conducted research into the link between health and the butt and studied no fewer than 16,000 women with a full derriere. It has been known for some time that body fat is important for health, but this research shows that the fat around the buttocks, thighs and hips promotes good health. The thickness of the butt and thighs reduces bad cholesterol levels and increases good cholesterol levels. This good cholesterol plays a role in protecting the body against cardiovascular disease and reduces the risk of diabetes. The fat in these places (also called the gluteo-femoral zone) also provides a kind of buffer for the fat that can be more dangerous in other places, such as on the abdomen. Gluteo-femoral fat also appears to produce more hormones that have a positive effect on weight and appetite. Specific proteins are also produced that have a positive effect against diabetes, extreme obesity or heart disease. So big buttocks are very healthy!

Other benefits

Not only is having a full butt very healthy, but there are also many other benefits, such as:

  1. Protects the lower back: If your derriere is too weak to allow your legs to move, smaller muscles will try to help. This quickly puts strain on your back, hips and knees.
  2. Easier pregnancy: Okay, it only makes your pregnancy go more smoothly a little bit, but every little bit helps. It ensures that you remain mobile through a balance between the pregnancy belly and the butt. This relieves the enormous tension on the spine a little more.
  3. Fuel: If you are so sick that you can no longer eat, if you don’t have time to eat lunch or even if you are in an emergency: extra fat stored in your body can serve as extra fuel.
  4. Not harmful: Compared to the excess white fat in your intestines that is surrounded by other organs and can lead to disease, high blood pressure and inflammation, your buttocks contain benign fat.
  5. More attractive: Some evolutionary psychologists believe that men would be more likely to date a woman with a full buttocks because it emphasizes the curves of the spine. This is very beneficial from an evolutionary perspective, because a curved spine relieves pressure and pain during pregnancy. This means that the woman is still mobile enough to look for food for herself until the baby is born, but this is of course from an evolutionary point of view.
