Every tea lover has their own routine. A cup of English Breakfast in the morning and in the afternoon you prefer something fresher such as green tea. But drinking tea might cause yellow teeth or is this just a myth? We looked it up for you.
Fact
Unfortunately, it is a fact that drinking tea is not good for your teeth. Not only because it causes discoloration and stubborn spots, but also because tiny cracks can appear that you cannot see with the naked eye. But why is that? Research by King’s College London’s Dental Institute shows that fruit teas, among other things, cause the teeth to erode. Hot water strengthens the natural acids of the fruit in the tea bag. This causes tooth enamel to be damaged more quickly.
The solution: drink tea with a dash of milk
Research from the University of Alberta shows that a cup of tea with a dash of milk discolors your teeth less than a cup of pure tea. They investigated this by placing human teeth in containers of tea with milk and containers of tea without milk. After 24 hours the color was checked. It turned out that the teeth with milk discolored much less quickly. How does this happen? The protein casein, a protein found in milk, protects the teeth against the protein tannin, which causes a bitter taste and stains on the teeth.
From now on, the English Breakfast flavor with a dash of milk, then?
