They sometimes say that when you pull out gray hairs, they simply grow back with more shades of gray. Yet this assumption needs to be debunked, according to doctors. “The color gray does not spread when you pull out your hair,” says dermatologist Dr. Hamdan Absdullah. “However, every time you pull it out you are also removing the follicle, so I suggest leaving the white hair as it is.” Although you won’t promote the growth of gray hairs when you pull them out, it’s good to know that you shouldn’t pull out the strands. It is important to try to stay away from this as it can eventually damage the follicle and surrounding hair follicles. Moreover, it can even lead to permanent cessation of hair growth in that area. And that is of course the last thing you want.
Regrowth of gray hair
In addition, hair surgeon Dr. Patrick Davis explains that strands that bother you will look exactly the same as they did before you pulled them out. “The hair follicle is actually the home of the hair, filled with the characteristics of the hair you’ve removed,” Davis explains. “So it will grow back with those same characteristics.” Also dermatologist Dr. Michele Green agrees with these words. “Once a follicle’s melanocytes die, pigment loss will occur and new gray-colored hairs will grow from the follicle,” she shares. “Although plucking gray hairs can lead to hair loss over time, it will not cause more gray hairs to grow as only one hair can grow from any given hair follicle.”

Experts agree that gray hair growth depends on many different factors, such as age, genetics or diet. “As we age, there are hormonal changes that cause gray hair to appear at a certain age,” Davis said. To predict whether you will also get a gray haircut later, it is best to look at your parents and grandparents. “If they had gray hair at a relatively young age, chances are it will happen to you too.”
Luckily, you can dye your hair any color you want, so if you’re not ready yet, you can always go into denial for a while. However, embracing your gray hair is also totally hot, so showing your natural hair color is also allowed.
