Diarrhea after drinking alcohol: why is that?

You know how it is: a slightly too pleasant evening that causes you to wake up the next morning with a pounding headache and a very dry mouth. And in the worst cases, you also get diarrhea after drinking alcohol and the toilet becomes your best friend… How come you go to the race after a night of drinking? We looked it up for you.

This is the reason for diarrhea after drinking alcohol

Everything was nice on Saturday evening and you had a few drinks, but the morning after going out you spend hours in the toilet with stomach cramps. Diarrhea after drinking alcohol is not pleasant, but it is very common. We have the reason for you!

Irritation

Firstly, alcohol can irritate the intestines enormously. This not only causes fluid to leak into the intestines, but also causes the muscles to contract more and more strongly and more frequently. These muscles also do this work when you actually have to poop. But when this happens excessively, due to the irritation of alcohol, the poop is ‘ejected’ before your intestines have a chance to absorb the water! The result? Weirdly shaped, thin muck. Blegh!

Trouble

But, diarrhea after drinking alcohol can also have another reason. Your intestines may also have a hard time doing their usual job due to your drunken state. And because of the enormous effort of the intestines, your poop will remain in its unprocessed and ‘pre-hydrated’ state.

Bacteria

And, as icing on the cake, it can be a bit more intense. Alcohol can kill the good bacteria in your intestines, ultimately causing the intestines to no longer be in balance. If too many ‘bad’ bacteria are present, the function of the intestines to absorb water may be completely affected. Oops…

Components

Finally, there is another cause of diarrhea after consuming drinks. In addition to the (much too high) alcohol content in the intestines, it is also possible that some components of the drink can play a role in the diarrhea. Consider, for example, drinking beer if you have a gluten allergy, or having intestinal complaints if you consume too many artificial sweeteners.

With what number of drinks will I not get diarrhea?

But now the question: how much can we drink to prevent all this? It is best to stick to two drinks a day. But, if you deviate from this recommended amount, alternate the drink with water. Staying hydrated allows the alcohol in your body to continue to dilute, making the effects less intense. And as far as the components of alcohol are concerned, if you are hypersensitive to sugars, for example, simply choose a drink that contains less sugar. Simple as that.
