Flying a plane is a childhood dream for some people. So it is for Britain’s Prince George. The eleven-year-old son of the Crown Prince is taking flying lessons!
Prince George takes flying lessons
Prince George is the son of Crown Prince William. A while ago he had his first flying lesson, and that at the age of eleven. The plane in which George had his first lesson was a Piper PA28. This is a light propeller plane. Of course, this all happened under the supervision of an instructor and George’s parents. They watched relaxed as their son sat behind the controls of a plane for the first time. George had his first flying lesson at White Waltham airfield. This is close to Adelaide Cottage, the current home of William, Kate and their family. This is located in the town of Maidenhead which is west of London.
During the flying lesson, spectators were able to watch the young teenager take to the skies for the first time. An onlooker told The Sun that the royal family has a proud tradition of flying and that it looks like George is the next in line to follow in the tradition. According to the onlooker, the parents looked relaxed, even thrilled.
Flying fan from a young age
The royal family has long been fans of flying. It was also instilled in young George from an early age. And although starting flying lessons at the age of eleven sounds very early, it is actually quite common. According to the website of White Waltham Airport, you must be at least sixteen years old to be allowed to make a solo flight. But people of all ages are allowed to take flying lessons. By learning to fly, George is following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who were all awarded their ‘royal wings’. It was therefore certainly no surprise that the eldest son of the Crown Prince would also become a pilot. Prince William had previously said that his son was a ‘pilot in the making’. He was also said to be obsessed with airplanes and wanted to become an air cadet. Last year, George, together with his sister Charlotte and brother Louis, were allowed to take a look at the Royal Air Force base. It soon became clear that George was very interested in airplanes. But it will take a while before the prince is actually allowed to train with the Royal Air Force. The first baby steps have already been taken!
