“These are difficult times, and their consequences cannot yet be clearly foreseen.”
After the beautiful family photo that Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco shared before Christmas, the next party was of course immediately on the agenda: the start of the new year! The princely couple shared their best wishes via Instagram with a brief look back on the past year. As usual, this happened in a nice and glamorous way.
Message in minor key
One monarch gives a speech at Christmas, and other dignitaries wait until New Year’s Eve to give their annual speech. This last category also includes His Serene Highness Prince Albert, who yesterday, side by side with Princess Charlene, looked back on 2023 and looked ahead to what the coming year will bring.
For example, the monarch shared that their illustrious hearts go out to ‘those affected by grief, suffering, illness and loneliness’ – nice and all-encompassing, nun? In addition, he of course reflected on all the unrest that is currently going on in the world.
“These are difficult times, and their consequences are not yet clear. Our country has been spared much of the turmoil in the world. So we have a shared obligation to recognize our good fortune and maintain the ambition to remain united by protecting our institutional model and our social and economic performance,” Albert said.

Positive note
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The Monegasque prince also reflected on the festivities that his country experienced last year around the 100e birthday of Prince Rainier III, and shared that Monaco’s “unique situation and unity” could protect the country from all kinds of evils in other countries. Meanwhile, Charlene stands next to her husband, smiling kindly in a deep red Ralph Lauren dress.
The monarch then looks to the coming year with a small burst of optimism. He states: “We cannot predict the future, but we can prepare for it. We may not be able to look ahead, but we have to [zelf] to make. The coming year comes with many challenges, but is full of rich promises.”
At the end of the video, Charlene actually speaks, albeit in unison with Albert. Together they wish their fellow countrymen, residents and friends a very happy New Year in three different languages. In this way they end a somewhat gloomy message on a positive note.
