The sports world mourns Franz Beckenbauer (✝78)! The former football player and national coach had been struggling with health problems for some time – including an eye attack a few years ago. He also had to undergo several heart operations and suffered from Parkinson’s and dementia. In September he is said to have celebrated his 78th birthday with his friends in order to make the best of the situation. But his condition has apparently not improved: Beckenbauer is dead.
An official statement from the family said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father Franz Beckenbauer passed away peacefully last Sunday surrounded by his family.” His relatives also ask that they be able to mourn in silence. The football legend was 78 years old.
Beckenbauer is one of the greatest footballers in German history. In 1974 he won the world championship with the German national team – in 1990 a second time, but as a coach. He was an official at the “Summer Fairy Tale” in 2006.
