In honor of the princess’s birthday, we’re going back in time.
It’s a big party at the Oranjes today, because it’s our former queen’s birthday. Princess Beatrix is blowing out no fewer than 86 candles today. And while she probably celebrates this with her family and a large piece of Black Forest cake (her favorite pastry), we at the editorial office do so with a dive into the archives.
Blushing cheeks
Little Beatrix soon turns out to be a little bugger. In her younger years she loved to be on the ropes – the future queen was scouting, and even in her very first photo shoots, that mischievous twinkle in her eye was undeniable.
Stately young lady
Ultimately, Beatrix grows up into a beautiful young lady who radiates glamor and elegance in her photo shoots. Moreover, the Glamial editors noticed how much the 20-year-old Beatrix here resembles granddaughter Amalia! So you see: the royal apple does not fall far from the tree.
With the boys
In 1965, Beatrix was spotted hand in hand with none other than Claus van Amsbergen. After quite a bit of controversy, the two got married and the marriage resulted in three beautiful sons: Willem-Alexander, Friso, and Constantijn.
On the throne
And in 1980 the moment finally arrived: Juliana abdicated the throne and it was up to Beatrix to take her place. A few days before her swearing-in, new portraits of the new queen will be released. (Literally) radiant in a glittering blue dress, the royal makes a clear statement: we can’t ignore her!
Last year, Bea treated her to new portrait photos on her birthday. We then saw the princess with son Willem-Alexander and successor Amalia: three generations of Orange in one sweet set of snapshots!

Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to find a set of new portraits anywhere today, but fortunately the Government Information Service has let us know that Beatrix has a pleasant day ahead of her. The princess is reportedly spending her birthday at home, and hopefully with lots of champagne and Black Forest cake. Heartily!
