It may be tempting, but it is not healthy.
Of course we want to come out with a fresh fragrance. A spray of perfume in the neck, on the wrists, behind your ears, etc. there you have it! But can you actually spray your perfume in your hair? Here’s how it works.
Bad for your hair and scalp
Yes, your locks smell great when you spray perfume on them, but it turns out you pay a high price for it. You can mess up the healthy pH balance of your scalp. Perfumes contain a lot of alcohol (this is to keep the scent longer), but we also know that your skin does not like alcohol at all.
Alcohol can irritate and dry out your scalp. You don’t want that, because that can result in flakes, and we always want to prevent those dandruff-like dead skin cells. Oh, and it’s also damaging to your locks. Alcohol can also dry out your locks. Do you spray perfume on the ends of your hair once? Then the damage is still manageable, but in the long run it can cause dry hair.
Dry out
Sophie Hilton, founder of Not Another Salon, also knows that perfume can have a negative effect on your scalp and locks. “We don’t always think about how high the alcohol content is in perfume when we spray it on our neck,” she tells Stylist. She goes on to say that up to a third of the perfume is immediately absorbed when we spray it there. And because our locks are against our neck, up to a third of the perfume ends up in our hair. But it can get worse, Hilton knows. “Some women also spray perfume directly into their hair, which leads to dryness.” So it should be clear that you should no longer spray perfume in your hair.
Alternative: hair mist
By the way, there are also alternatives to make your hair smell nice if you don’t feel like washing it again, such as hair mists. Not only do they make your mane smell delicious, but some also have a hydrating effect on your locks. You can’t get a better win-win situation!
