“I got a head like a beetroot,” the prince recalled.
As the wife of the – not entirely faithful – future King of England, Princess Diana had a lot on her plate. Yet she was first and foremost just a concerned mother, who could sometimes play the fool with her teenage sons.
Teenagers
Any mother will tell you that raising a set of teenagers can be quite the challenge. And that is especially true when you have two of the most famous sons in the world: Prince William and Prince Harry.
It has been established over the decades that Lady Di raised her sons ‘as normally as possible’. Not always the fuss with strict protocols, but sometimes just enjoying a ride to an amusement park in a windbreaker.
Cheeky
But then again, as Princess of Wales, Diana did have some opportunities and privileges that the average mother doesn’t have. For example, she cleverly used her connections to fool her sons.
Like many teenage boys in the 90s, Wills had posters of models like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington on his bedroom wall. And that gave Diana an idea.
As Crawford recalled, “Somehow Princess Diana got my office number and called me personally to ask for me. My assistant was in shock!”
Eventually, it is agreed that the supermodel will come to the palace on her next assignment in London, to have tea with the highnesses. According to Cindy, it was specifically mentioned that it would be a nice surprise for Harry and big brother William, who had ‘recently become aware of models’. Ooh la la!
Biggest fun
In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William looked back on the supreme moment, when he came home to find one of his celebrity crushes in the living room.
“I was probably a 12 or 13-year-old kid who had posters of them on his wall. I got all twitchy and I didn’t know what to say – and I was a bit awkward and I think I almost fell walking up the stairs,” the prince recalled. “I was completely speechless. But that was a very funny memory.”
Sweet memories
In the same documentary, brother Harry also spoke about their mother’s sense of humor. “She was a really big kid to the bone. I can still hear her laughing in my head. That kind of crazy laugh, that there was only pure joy on her face.” Aww!
Who knows what pranks the two princes are playing on their offspring these days. They must have gotten that sense of humor from their mother!
