Arguments on family holidays: this is how you prevent them

Are you going on holiday with your family this summer? Super cozy! During such a holiday you make many wonderful memories together, but there is also a chance that you will clash here and there. After all, you two are really close to each other. This is how to avoid getting into fights during your family vacation.

Be aware in advance of the things that irritate you

Preventing arguments starts with yourself. Before you get in the car to the airport, think about what would irritate you. Think back to previous holidays and the arguments that took place there. What feelings did you feel then? If you are aware of this, the blow will be a lot less severe when these situations arise. You already saw this coming. This may sound very pessimistic, but if you have low expectations, the behavior of others can also disappoint you less. So if you know in advance that your brother is going to tease you, you will be less disappointed when it actually happens.

Come up with a relaxation route

Sometimes you just need a moment for yourself during a holiday. You are constantly at each other’s throats and that can only worsen built-up frustration. At many holiday destinations you cannot simply get in the car and isolate yourself for a while. Therefore, make it a priority at the beginning of the holiday to find a good relaxation route. Look for nice places where you can be alone for a while. Think of a nice cafe near the hotel, a far corner of the resort you are at or the beach. There you can catch your breath and prevent the situation from escalating.

Think about why your family behaves this way

Arguments on holiday can arise because you are annoyed by the behavior of certain family members. It’s annoying that they act like that, so you get frustrated. But why do they actually behave this way? Sometimes tackling the cause is the best way to solve a problem. If you notice someone doing or saying something that you don’t like, it can be helpful to ask why they are doing or saying that. For example, ask what exactly they mean, or what they need at that moment. Sometimes you can find a solution together that helps you both.

Come up with good strategies to calm yourself down when you do get into an argument

Suppose the situation does escalate. Then make sure you know when to walk away and calm yourself down. Know the best way to calm yourself down so you don’t lash out at your family member. Resolving an argument will never work if you both experience a lot of emotions. So calm yourself down before you try to make peace.
