The Spanish queen had something to make up for.
During the recent state visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia to the House of Orange, there was one thing that stood out: the hat on Letizia’s head. And that wasn’t because the hat itself was so crazy, but because the queen is known to hate headgear. A few years ago, this would have led to some skepticism towards Queen Máxima…and of course that had to be corrected!
State visit
We can say that Spain’s state visit to the Netherlands was a great success. The close bond between the two families was emphasized several times and the royal couples completed a busy but valuable program in the space of two days. That’s all well and good, but of course we’d be lying if we said we weren’t most interested in the outfits of the queens within the company.
With all the iconic fashion moments of Leti and Máx in mind, we were already preparing for a real fashion show by the queens, and that turned out to be only right. While the Spanish royal couple were welcomed on Dam Square, both their eminences made their appearance in an outfit that made the hearts of many fashionistas beat faster.
Hats
Máxima appeared in a deep red ensemble, which Josine Droogendijk of Fashion Queen Máxima tells us is from fashion house favorite Natan. Not the biggest surprise, but a beautiful look. The large colossus on Máx’s head is a design by Fabienne Delvigne, also the queen’s purveyor.
Letizia, in turn, shone in a checked dress by Moisés Nieto. On her head was a hat from the Spanish brand Balel. And the latter is quite special, since the Spanish queen usually prefers not to wear hats. According to fashion journalist Josine Droogendijk, her hat collection could only be counted on two hands. “And that is of course quite unique for a queen.”
Sorry
During the last state visit, Queen Letizia did rock a hat, and that was because she still had to put something right. Felipe and Letizia were in the Netherlands for a short introductory visit in 2014, and there was some fuss about the queens’ clothing choices.

The Spanish press reportedly thought that Queen Máxima was a bit ‘too much’ and ‘exaggerated’ dressed at the time, because – unlike Letizia – she wore such a large hat. However, this criticism was unjustified, because Máxima was the hostess and then you determine the dress code.
Leti made up for this mistake (ten years later).
