This Sunday is May 5, or Liberation Day! On this day we celebrate that our country was liberated after five years of war. This is how you can celebrate freedom this Sunday.
Go to a liberation festival
On Liberation Day there are always a lot of different liberation festivals. For example, there is a festival on the Malieveld in The Hague. In Amsterdam you also have the opportunity to do a dance to celebrate freedom. There are festivals everywhere in the country where you can go for free. So this is your sign that you need to gather a group of friends!
Join us for a freedom meal
On Liberation Day, freedom meals are organized throughout the country. You can then eat together with your friends, family or neighbors to celebrate freedom. During these meals it is important to discuss the subject of freedom. So while eating, take a moment to think about the freedoms we have and the people who don’t. You can organize a freedom meal yourself, or see if a meal is being organized in your neighborhood that you can join.
Go to the May 5 concert
Every year, Liberation Day ends festively with a major concert in Amsterdam. This year there are also a lot of artists that you certainly don’t want to miss. For example, Guus Meeuwis, Flemming and Emma Kok perform. The king will also be present. Can’t make it to be there physically? The concert will then also be broadcast on TV.
Go to a fireworks show
In many Dutch cities, Liberation Day ends festively with a large fireworks show. For example, there is a fireworks and laser show in Hilversum. Is there a nicer way to end this special day? We don’t think so!
Visit a war museum to commemorate the war
On Liberation Day we reflect on the freedom we regained after the Second World War. If you want to spend this day in a meaningful way, you can visit a war museum. This way you might learn something new, and you can reflect on the past and the people who fought for our freedom.
Dedicate yourself to people who are not free
Unfortunately, the reality of the world is that not everyone is free. We once lost our freedom in the Netherlands, but we have it back. This is a luxury that not everyone on this planet can enjoy. If you want to do something for these people, you can organize a campaign on Liberation Day, for example to raise money for people living in war.
