Create your dream home with an affordable makeover

Have you just bought a new home or are you tired of your current interior, but do you have little financial space left for a complete renovation? If you handle every room in your house in a smart way, you can save on a lot of costs. Sometimes a lick of paint is enough for a completely new look, in other places you need to work a little more thoroughly. From dream kitchen to romantic bedroom and any other room: this is how you give them an affordable makeover, without it looking ‘standard’.

Start in the kitchen

Create a kitchen entirely according to your wishes. In more and more households, this is the place where you spend the most time because it is such a lively space. Especially if it concerns a kitchen/diner. Is it necessary to use an expensive designer with even more expensive materials to solve this? Not necessarily. For example, showroom kitchens have the advantage that they are reasonable in price. Furthermore, the kitchen unit and the cupboards mainly form a basis for the unique ambiance that you create yourself: with your favorite appliances, fragrant herb plants, accessories and other eye-catchers.

Standard

Forget that black and gold trend in your living room

Once your kitchen has been transformed to your satisfaction, you can move on to the living room. Here, the incidence of light is often a luxury problem that you solve in various ways. First of all, paint the walls in lighter colors and step away from the trend imposed by self-proclaimed interior gurus. Black and gold are initially fun, but at the same time somewhat kitschy and they are disastrous for the light and your mood. White is a suitable basis for any interior style, so pick up a brush and make your living room a lot brighter. Other ways include adjusting your window decoration, adding shiny objects such as glass tables and mirrors, and installing a glass dividing door: this is a timeless trend, unlike black walls.

Bedroom: personal and therefore familiar

For the bedroom, quite a few standard elements are used in living programs under the heading of hotel chic, but you want this space to be personal and recognizable – and not anonymous. That’s why you store souvenirs there, put your precious photos on your bedside table and decorate the wall with images of your heroes from sports, music or film. A lot of vintage also comes in handy here to create atmosphere: think of a classic dressing table with mirror. Because this room does not necessarily need a lot of light, use a color range for the walls, although it is best to avoid overly dark tones. In any case, the paint brush works wonders again!

Freshen up the bathroom

Renovating the bathroom is mainly a matter of stripping and cleaning. The demolition hammer is usually taken out without thinking when a bathroom is no longer satisfactory, while a cleaning and stripping of all loose parts already gives a completely different appearance. You use the same approach for the toilet. Clean the tiles thoroughly and paint the walls in a different color. Replace the lighting with a more attractive version. Remove that old shower curtain, toilet roll holder, mirror and cupboards and replace them with others, possibly from your local thrift store. And voilà: your bathroom is like new.
