Eccentric style
Iris Apfel was born on August 29, 1921 in New York. She made a splash in her life as a fashion celebrity, model and interior designer. Her style? Eccentric, exuberant, and above all: colorful. Her big, round glasses, red lipstick and white hair made her unavoidable at every fashion show she attended.
Apfel’s special style and way of looking at life inspired Albert Maysles to make a documentary about her: Iris. “I’m not beautiful, and I will never be beautiful, but that doesn’t matter,” were her legendary words. “I have something much better. I have style.”
Pension
Apfel never retired, but no: at the age of 96 she signed another modeling contract. “I think retirement at any age is a fate worse than death,” she once said. “Just because a number comes up doesn’t mean you have to stop.”
Apfel’s agent Lori Sale honored her icon in a statement. “Working with her was the honor of a lifetime. I will miss her daily phone calls, always greeted with the familiar question, “What do you have for me today?” A testament to her insatiable desire to work. She was a visionary in every sense of the word. She saw the world through a unique lens – one adorned with a pair of giant, eye-catching glasses that sat atop her nose.”
